The picturesque village Marmara in Paros
The mountainous village of Marmara
Marmara is located 14 kilometers from Parikia, and it took its name from the ancient marbles that have been found in this area and which have been used for the construction of the houses and churches of the village. At the entrance of the village there is a Mill and a bit further, at the village’s square there is a café, where you can try various delicacies.
The white church of Taxiarhis, the church of the Assumption with its three bell towers (each of a different style) and the blazon of the Sommaripa family at the entrance dominate the village. In Marmara, the visitor of Paros can also admire the old mansions.
There are many churches, windmills and fertile fields; that is why most people are into farming.
Ancient pottery workshops have been found on the mountain Antikefalos and it is said that the ancient city Iria is buried in the same area. There is access from Marmara to the eastern beaches of Paros (Kalogeros, Tsoukalia, Glifades).
